Narooma Men’s Bowls

As forecast last week, the strong team from Warilla Bowling Club won all their five games with a plus 89 margin to take out the inaugural Narooma Sporting and Services Club Blue Water Classic Fours tournament over the June long weekend.

Skipped by former South African representative Eric Johannes and with Premier League players in John Ritchie, Geoff McGillivray (Cardiff indoor singles representative) and James Mitchell at third, the Warilla side ran out comprehensive winners taking home the $4,000 first prize. ACT representative John Bice skipped a strong Belconnen team with Greg Megee, Clive Webster and Ken Franklin to run second with five wins and plus 41. The only other five game winners in John Monahan, Rod Featherston, Tim Monahan and Barry Gladman (skip) from Queenscliff in Victoria ran third with a plus 34 margin.

Despite the constant threat of rain, all games were completed on time and thanks were expressed to the greenkeeper team for their efforts all weekend and in preparation for the event. Narooma Sporting and Services Club chairman Graham Reeve presented the prizemoney (as principal sponsors) and all players extended a vote of thanks to Tournament director and Men’s Bowling Club president John Muir who organized the event and coordinated a strong team of volunteers to umpire, feed the players and generally ensure that a good time was had by all. The bar staff were kept busy all weekend!

This tournament looks likely to become a permanent fixture on the Narooma calendar and players are already leaving their contact details to ensure an invitation for the long weekend in June, 2009. With 140 visiting players and their supporters in town the club had a busy weekend.
